FRESHMAN FOCUS: DSLR All-Florida Freshman Team + 100 Florida Freshman to watch

Updated: Jul 7, 2022

May 30, 2022

We are going to kick off our first Freshman Focus by announcing our All-Florida Freshman team which celebrates the top 20 freshman in the state of Florida this season. We follow that up by listing nearly 100 additional players who have enjoyed significant playing time on varsity during the 2022 spring season in Florida.

DLSR All-Florida Freshman Team:

Attack

Luke Danna

Attackman

Creekside High School, Saint Johns

We only caught Danna in one game this year against the Saint Edward's vaunted defense who held the Knights to 7 goals that day, but Danna is a shifty, slashing type of attackman who normally poses a lot of trouble to defenses as evidenced by the 64 goals he netted this season.

Dylan Faison (Class of 2026)

Attackman/Midfielder

Pine Crest School, Fort Lauderdale

Logged a ton of minutes as an 8th grader during a big season for Pine Crest. Very quick, shifty dodger who can get to the goal or bury it from outside. Dynamic athlete. Looks to be following in his brother Jordan's footsteps. Nice chemistry between the 2 on the field for the Panthers this season.

Shea Huberman

Attackman

Spanish River Community High School, Boca Raton

Started at Spanish River this season and was a big reason why the Sharks came within a goal of forcing overtime against Boca Raton in the district championship. Very nice hands, hard to slow down with a nasty shot.

Midfield

Ford Cash

Midfielder

The Benjamin School, Palm Beach Gardens

2 way middie who has nice speed and likes to let it fly on the run. Minutes seemed to have increased as the season wore on in Palm Beach Gardens. Important piece to the 2022 Bucs run as state finalist.

Travis Cheristin

Short Stick Defensive Midfielder

St. John Paul II Academy, Boca Raton

Fast SSDM who plays excellent hip to hip defense making it difficult for opponents to isolate against him when trying to initiate offense off of a dodge. Speed allows him to transition the ball from defense to offense with his legs. This kid has the athleticism to be a real difference maker especially if he can mature more on the offensive end.

Mason Hauseman

Midfielder

Ponte Vedra High School, Ponte Vedra

Spent much of the season on the 2nd line midfield in the shadows of Maddox Johnson and Corey Bloss. Played a lot of minutes during Final Four weekend in Naples. Should develop nicely as he matures. Can envision more plays going through him in his sophomore season.

Caden Hayes

Midfielder/Attackman

The Benjamin School, Palm Beach Gardens

Enjoyed an incredible freshman season with increasing responsibilities during the Bucs playoff run. Kid can take the ball and slash his way to the cage and finish. Fearless. Fast. Hard to beat on defense when he's playing as a 2 way midfielder. Tough as nails, can absorb a big hit and pop right back up and be back in the play in the blink of an eye. No way Benjamin plays Saint Andrews to a 2 goal game in the state championship without him in the lineup. Really helped the Bucs not miss a beat after Luke Pisani became unavailable.

Jake Rodriguez

Midfielder/Face-off Specialist

Bishop Verot Catholic High School, Fort Myers

Was a force playing most of the season as a 2 way middie who also grabs grounds balls off the wing on face-offs. Became a secondary option at face-offs for Bishop Verot as the season wore on. Good athlete with excellent field sense, you won't find this kid out of position on either end of the field very often and he possesses good discipline keeping himself from taking unnecessary penalties. His contributions helped the Vikings make the regional playoff in 2022. Should develop more this summer going north to play club ball again. Off to a good start trying to make the varsity football team at Verot starting at cornerback in their spring game this week.

Holden Scully

Midfielder

Cardinal Gibbons High School, Fort Lauderdale

Quick 2 way midfielder with a very smooth no nonsense style of play, gets himself into prime real estate and lets it rip.

Dustin Sluszka

Midfielder

Jupiter Community High School, Jupiter

Logged a lot of minutes for Jupiter in 2022, kid knows how to go to the rack when its his turn. With Jackson Bashaw graduating the Warriors will likely look for Sluszka to generate offensive opportunities in his sophomore season and it appears like he should be ready for that challenge.

Jayden Vega

Midfielder/Face-off Specialist

Martin County High School, Stuart

This kid is pure excitement, whether its battling it out at the face-off dot or grabbing a pole on man down he gets his nose in there. Caught the district semifinals and enjoyed watching him step up in big spots like helping lead a run when down 3 with 2 minutes left to Vero Beach in the championship game eventually burying the game tying goal with 46.4 seconds left. They would lose in overtime but still made regionals and beat Lake Nona before losing to Winter Park to end their season. Undoubtedly Vega is a big reason the Tigers enjoyed such a strong season. Star potential.

Campbell Zegras

Midfielder

Oxbridge Academy, West Palm Beach

Received a lot of playing time at Oxbridge this season and did not disappoint. The 2 way middie plays good hip to hip defense, is very hard to shake when isolated and will hurt you on the offensive side of the ball. Expecting to see him become dominant as he gains more responsibility on offense.

Face-off

Dylan Furshman

Face-off Specialist

The Benjamin School, Palm Beach Gardens

Dominant. Tempted to just leave it at 1 word. Dominant. Must've caught 6 or 7 Bucs games this season and he literally dominated every single time until the State Championship when he went up against Saint Andrews Nick Golubov, who may have had a better day, but it was by no means one sided. Complete competitor, strong, gets it out fast and goes, can unleash a mean shot when its there, and its there a lot. Varsity football player at Benjamin, honor roll. His future is bright.

Zachary Lewis

Face-off Specialist

Gulf Coast High School, Naples

Impressive at the face-off dot where we have watched Zachary enjoy strong games against Bishop Verot, St. John Paul II and Cardinal Mooney this season. Uses good form to get the ball out cleanly.

Defense

Alex Michaelides

Defenseman

St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale

Solid defenseman who got lots of minutes throughout the Raiders run to the state title. Good cover defense, stays in position and doesn't overextend. Part of a youth movement on the defensive side of the ball at Aquinas in 2022. It will be interesting to see how good this group will become and hoping to see more out of state games on their schedule to really test them. Aquinas gave Boy's Latin of Maryland (#3 ranked team in MD) a run for their money for 24 minutes back in March down in Fort Lauderdale.

Connor O'Brien

Defenseman

Jupiter Community High School, Jupiter

Major contributor to Jupiter's 2022 season, logged lots of minutes especially in more competitive games. Hard to beat on the dodge, has the ability to get the ball on the ground and can pick it up and take it across the field in transition.

Owen Thomas

Defenseman

St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale

Good smart defenseman, hard to beat 1 on 1, extremely effective at keeping offenses from getting good looks. If defensemen had stats like "checking percentage" he would be up there with the state leaders. When he decides to throw a check there's a good chance the ball is going on the carpet, and when that happens it's scoop and go time. Always seems to make good decisions for such a young player.

Beckley Waldrop

Defenseman

Saint Edwards School, Vero Beach

Tall, strong, quick defenseman who plays fast. Aggressive style which causes plenty of disruption to opposing offenses. Seems comfortable matching up against the oppositions better players. Already has nice size and should be a major force as he matures over the next few years.

Goalie

Jackson Lynch

Goaltender

Viera High School, Melbourne

Calm and cool in cage he seems to make saves other can't. Exciting with the ball in his stick, has good athleticism with smooth hands and quick feet making him dangerous to start the clear himself. Wish we saw more of him but seems like a legit 'keeper coming out of Melbourne in 2025.

Zach Rosenberg

Goaltender

NSU University School, Fort Lauderdale

Absolute beast season at NSU University School for this young goaltender who already makes high quality saves look very easy. Excellent form that entices one to think the sky is the limit athletically for Rosenberg. Has lightning fast hands, makes good decisions and throws strong, accurate outlet passes. It's really hard to pick a part of Zach's game that isn't excellent. He made 31 saves including 14 in the 1st quarter at Benjamin on March 8 in a performance for the ages that saw Rosenberg deny the likes of Luke Pisani, Jack Regnery and Brady Quinn over and over for 3+ quarters. The game was a 17-5 loss, but if you can find a good tape of his performance, you will definitely want to have a look.

Also considered: Greer Boree, Jameson Fogelsong, Mac Goodman, Jackson Hume, Ben Kupstas, Isaac Lyon, Michael Slusar

horrible list no attention paid to Blake Walker from Jensen beach. Dominated the X this year as well as the mats during wrestling season.
