2021 Week 3 College Recap

ACC keeps rolling after 3 weeks into 2021 as we saw Mercer travel to Raleigh on Saturday to take on Duke where Michael Sowers and Joe Robertson scored 4 goals each to lead the Blue Devils to a 17-8 victory over the Bears. Mercer's Ashton Wood (Allen D. Nease High School, FL) was 15-28 at the dot with 8 GB's, while Duke's Tyler Carpenter (Durham, NC native) picked up 5 GB's and caused 4 turnovers. Duke heads to Towson while Mercer plays Jacksonville in Savannah, GA this Saturday.

North Carolina met Jacksonville in Chapel Hill on Saturday and turned an early 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter into an 18-7 route of the Dolphins. Chris Gray led the way for the Tar Heels with 4 goals and 3 assists, while Nicky Solomon (Centennial High School, GA) added 2 and 1. Jacksonville freshman Sam Chase scored a goal in the loss, after scoring 2 goals on Wednesday in the Dolphins 19-8 win over Bellarmine at home.

In other D1 southern action, High Point finally opened their season against Robert Morris in NC where the Panthers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead and never looked back earning a 21-15 victory. High Point's Asher Nolting led all scorers with 4 goals and 3 assists, while Jaxson Lamb (Oak Hall School, FL) chipped in a goal for the winners. Elliot Holden (Page High School, NC) scored twice for Robert Morris in defeat. High Point heads to Chapel Hill to battle North Carolina TODAY at 2pm.


In the D2 southern game of the week, Anderson University (SC) finally got to play in their inaugural game after a cancellation vs. Shorter last weekend. Anderson would take a 9-5 lead into the half, but Montevallo would mount a comeback and when Trayne Hunter scored with 3:13 left, it would force overtime. 75 seconds into OT the Trojan's Ryley Zopfi scored unassisted to give Anderson the win in their inaugural game. Trayne Hunter led all scorers with 4 goals and 1 assist, while Anderson's Cam Weeks (Oceanside Collegiate Academy, SC) was dominant winning 26-30 face-offs, and goaltender Sean Ring (North Gwinnett High School, GA) made 21 saves in the win.

Another great game saw Lenoir-Rhyne jump out to a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes, but the lead would dwindle and with 1:07 left Devin Napoli would score to pull within 1, but North Greenville wouldn't score again falling 9-8. David Bell led the Bears with 4 goals, and Thomas Cecere led the Crusaders with 3 goals and 2 assists. Freshman Nick Robinson (North Paulding High School, GA) was 10-20 on the draw for North Greenville, while Lenoir-Rhyne goaltender Noah Johnson (Northview High School, GA) had 9 saves in the win. In other action, Catawba downed Belmont Abbey 13-9 on Friday, while on Saturday Limestone beat Mars Hill 21-5, Wingate beat Barton 20-3, and Emmanuel vs. UAH was postponed. Chowan fell to Tusculum on Sunday 13-6.


In D3 action, Birmingham Southern and Southwestern were postponed on Friday, Greensboro beat Oglethorpe 14-5, and Pfeiffer beat Centenary 21-2 on Saturday, Shenandoah beat William Peace 17-8 on Sunday, and Averett beat Centenary 12-5 on Monday.


Shifting over to NAIA games, Webber International played their inaugural game on Saturday losing 19-8 against #5 University of the Cumberlands at home. Chase Jackson (Steinbrenner High School, FL) led Webber in scoring with 3 goals and 2 assists. Cumberlands would cross the state to take on #3 Keiser on Sunday with the Seahawks coming away with the 12-9 victory. John Senior (Martin County High School, FL) led Keiser's scoring attack with 4 goals while Cumberland's Schylar Chapman (North Paulding, GA) picked up 4 GB's. On Monday, St. Andrews defeated Montreat 12-5.
